Objavljen je 22. listopada 2021. u izdanju diskografskih kuća Polydor i Interscope, sedam mjeseci nakon objave njenog prethodnog albuma, Chemtrails over the Country Club.[1][2] Blue Banisters žanrovski se oslanja na folk, pop, jazz i americanu, a kritičari ga opisuju kao introspektivno djelo u kojemu Del Rey tematizira svoja osobna promišljanja i unutarnje emocionalno stanje.[3][4]
Album je debitirao na prvom mjestu Billboardove ljestvice alternativnih albuma, čime je Del Rey postavila rekord s ukupno šest albuma na toj poziciji. U SAD-u je, osim toga, zasjeo i na osmo mjesto Billboardove ljestvice Billboard 200.[5]
Del Rey je u svibnju 2021. objavila tri promotivna singla za album: »Blue Banisters,« »Text Book« i »Wildflower Wildfire.« Singl »Arcadia« uslijedio je 8. rujna 2021.[6]

Album Blue Banisters dobio je uglavnom pozitivne kritike glazbenih publikacija. AnyDecentMusic? dodijelio mu je 7,4/10, dok je na Metacriticu postigao 80/100. Portal The Line of Best Fit ocijenio ga je s 7/10, a Pitchfork s 7,7/10.
Domagoj Jurić je u recenziji za portal Muzika.hr napisao da »sviranje ugađa atmosferi, pjevanje je kontinuirano izvrsno i emocionalno, a narativni aspekt suosjećajan te pun osobnosti,« te je opisao album kao »djelo bujne ljepote,« kritiziravši pritom skladbu »Black Bathing Suit« zbog nedostataka u produkciji te »Interlude – The Trio« zbog nedorečenosti.[7]
Album je bio uvršten je na razne godišnje liste najboljih albuma 2021. godine. Časopis Slant smjestio ga je na treće mjesto u izboru najboljih 50 albuma 2021. godine,[8] dok ga je The Sunday Times rangirao kao deveti najbolji album godine.[9] Na listi Indie Hoy zauzeo je 10. mjesto[10], dok su ga NME i Exclaim! smjestili na 17.,[11] odnosno 31. mjesto.[12]
