Tetanus is induced by an exotoxin of the tetanus bacillus (Clostridium tetani), which grows anaerobically at site of injury. Tetanus is characterized by painful muscular contractions, primarily of the masseter, and other large muscles.

Español: El paciente de la fotografía presenta tétanos facial. Destaca la contracción de los músculos del maxilar y el cuello. El tétanos es provocado por una exotoxina del bacilo tetánico (Clostridium tetani), que crece en una herida, por lo general a nivel cutáneo.
