Stekao je svjetsku slavu romanom Things Fall Apart kasnih 1950-ih; slijedili su romani No Longer at Ease (1960.), Arrow of God (1964.), A Man of the People (1966.) i Anthills of the Savannah (1987.). Godine 1975. izazvao je kontroverzu predavanjem An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" u kome je pisca Josepha Conrada optužio za rasizam.
