Humsteri uglavnom nastaju zbog dva razloga:

* Kako bi se izbjegli pravni problemi zbog rada s čistim ljudskim linijama embrionalnih matičnih stanica,
* Kako bi se procijenila sposobnost ljudskoga spermija za [[in vitro oplodnja|oplodnju ''in vitro'']].
