Ova je formacija nazvana po njemačkom matematičaru [[Christopher Clavius|Christopheru Claviusu]] (1537.-1612.). Njegovo je ime uvršteno kao &amp;quot;Clavius Soc. I.&amp;quot; u [[Selenografija|lunarnu nomenklaturu]] talijanskog astronoma [[Giovanni Battista Riccioli|Giovannija B. Ricciolija]] 1651. godine. &amp;quot;Soc. == Opis ==&lt;br /&gt;
Claviusov položaj prema južnom rubu Mjeseca uzrokuje da izgleda duguljasto zbog skraćivanja. Njegova veličina čini ga vidljivim golim okom kao istaknuti zarez u terminatoru otprilike jedan do dva dana nakon što Mjesec dosegne [[Prva četvrt|prvu četvrt]]. Clavius ima nizak vanjski zid u usporedbi s veličinom te je jako istrošen i izbušen kraterima. Rub ne nadvisuje značajno okolni teren, što ga čini &amp;quot;zidanom depresijom&amp;quot;. Unutarnja površina ruba je brdovita, nazubljena i varira u širini s najstrmijim dijelom na jugu. Dno Claviusa tvori konveksnu ravninu koju obilježavaju neki zanimljivi udari kratera. Najznačajniji od njih je zakrivljeni lanac kratera koji počinje s [[Rutherfurd (krater)|Rutherfurdom]] na jugu, a zatim se proteže preko dna u smjeru suprotnom od kazaljke na satu, tvoreći niz kratera sve manjih promjera. Od najvećeg do najmanjeg, ovi krateri su označeni kao Clavius D, C, N, J i JA.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;Grego_2005&amp;quot;/&amp;gt; Ovaj niz sve manjih kratera pokazao se korisnim alatom za amaterske astronome koji žele testirati [[Optička razlučivost|razlučivost]] svojih malih [[teleskop]]a.&lt;br /&gt;

== Prisutnost vode ==&lt;br /&gt;
U listopadu 2020. NASA je potvrdila postojanje [[Voda na Mjesecu|molekularne vode]] u blizini Claviusa, u koncentracijama do 412 dijelova na milijun. Voda bi mogla biti zarobljena u sitne strukture nalik kuglicama u tlu koje nastaju zbog visoke topline stvorene udarima mikrometeorita.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;NASA_2020&amp;quot;/&amp;gt; Voda bi također mogla biti zaštićena između zrnaca mjesečevog tla. Druga mogućnost su vrlo mali udari asteroida, poput hrpe ruševina od mnogo masivnijeg sudara &amp;quot;matičnih&amp;quot; asteroida.
